AND THE POLA INTERVIEWS CONTINUE!
I’ve saved some amazing people for this week and today is no different with the lovely and talented Hannah Huffman. Hannah’s Spectra shots were some of the first I ever discovered on flickr. Hannah’s Polaroids are filled with personality, love and things close to her heart. Her work is raw and intelligent and full of life. Hannah has had gallery exhibitions, she shot the summer line for fashion label, Wiksten, with some beautiful results and her work was also featured in For the Love of Light. You can purchase some of her prints here.
Welcome to Paper Cameras, Hannah!

PC: Why Polaroid?
Hannah: Polaroid was definitely the camera of my youth. I have so many childhood memories captured on those squares that it didn’t take much for me to renew my attachment to them. It really is the perfect combination of magic, anticipation and nearly instant gratification, and how could you not love the sound of all that whirring and spitting?

One of Hannah’s family photographs from her childhood.
PC: Which Polaroid cameras do you use? Do you prefer some over others?
Hannah: I started with a Sun 600 land camera and then fell in love with the Spectra because of Annie, it’s that big beautiful landscape of a rectangle that sold me. Iscoffed at 600. Who needed it? A friend of mine picked up a mint condition colorpack at an estate sale and handed it right over to me. Brian gave me a pack of film and a quick lesson and i’ve been dabbling with pack film a bit, but then he loaned me and SX-70 and I fell hard for 600 again. I had to take back all the mean things I said.

{Editor’s note- this is one of my favourite Spectra Roids ever}
PC: A Polaroid genie appears to grant you any Polaroid wish. Who or what would you shoot with your Polaroid?
Hannah: Oh Time Zero. Most definitely. The best blues on the planet.

PC: Please share a couple of your favourite Polaroids and tell us the story behind them.

Hannah: This is hard! David and I celebrated our ten year anniversary 08.08.08 with the most perfect relaxing trip to the Sea Ranch, CA. Seven days of watching the ocean, taking photographs, drinking coffee and naps. I’ve never been so at ease.

Hannah: Towards the end of September I was feeling crummy so I decided to have my own pola week, I had just renewed my love affair with 600 and the SX70. I get the best light at the end of the day at the back of my house, it filters through the trees and either glows like crazy or dances on the walls. I’ll take either anytime.

PC: Can you tell us about some of your favourite Polaroiders?
Hannah: This is even harder! There is so much amazing Polaroid talent on flickr, which is why Roid Week is so much fun. Annie, Matt, Keks, Molly, I could go on and on, they all blow me away, but it was Jen who made me fall in love with the soft side of Polaroid.
PC: Thank you so very much Hannah. We love your work!
