POLAROID PHOTOGRAPHER: LINDSAY JOSAL

October 30th, 2008 · 4 Comments · Feature Photographer, Polaroid

WHAT CAN I NOT SAY ABOUT LINDSAY JOSAL? I am a gushingly big fan of this little lady’s Polaroid photography. She simply creates magical photographs. Many of them are of two beautiful girls whom she obviously knows quite well as she manages to capture them both at their most quiet and most joyful. It’s a gift I wish I had for capturing oneself in the realest of moments…and she does it with a finicky Polaroid camera! The light in Lindsay’s Polaroids are unlike any other’s…just magic. If you don’t know her, get thee to her Polaroids now.

PC: Why Polaroid?

Lindsay: I love all aspects of Polaroid! For example: the wait while the image becomes visible, the sound the camera makes, the size and format, the colors the film produces, the individuality of each single image, etc. There’s nothing else quite like it!

PC: Which Polaroid cameras do you use? Do you prefer some over others?

Lindsay: Mostly my images have been shot with a Polaroid SX-70 Sonar OneStep or a Polaroid Spectra System SE. Just a month ago, I was fortunate enough to have been given a Polaroid SLR 680 from a good friend, and I’m really loving it.

PC: A Polaroid genie appears to grant you any Polaroid wish. Who or what would you shoot with your Polaroid?

Lindsay: Gosh, first I’d tell him not to quit! But I think I’d love to do editorial/fashion shots for really creative and inspiring talent in the art world. I also love people and their stories, I’d love to work on some really interesting documentary Polaroid photograph projects as well.

PC: Please share a couple of your favourite Polaroids and tell us the story behind them.

Lindsay: My sister is my best friend, and my favorite person to take pictures of always. This shot was taken in Chicago this past summer visiting my family. We all had a lovely weekend together, it’s always good to go home.

Lindsay: This Polaroid was taken while I visited one of my best friends in China. We backpacked around inner China, and stayed in Chengdu a couple days just to see the pandas. Aside from seeing the cutest little guys on the planet, we had a really interesting and story-filled trip that I will never forget!

PC: Can you tell us about some of your favourite Polaroiders?

Jonathan Leder is completely inspiring to me. In the nearly 3×3 inch frame size that Polaroid film provides, he captures beautiful woman who with one image you want to know their entire story. He also has knockout 35mm images as well.

Lindsay’s Polaroid work can be seen in the book, For the Love of Light. Her website is here, she shares her favourite inspirations here and you can check out her flickrstream here.
